A New Year in the Theater!

Most theater seasons don’t run with the calendar year. Even so, the new year brings excitement and possibility, even if you’re in the middle of your theatrical offerings. Just as we all make new years resolutions that may not make it to February, we step back into our spaces after the ball drops with renewed determination and a twinkle in our eyes.

So how do we make sure that, just like our new set of kettlebells, our plans don’t gather dust before we can see the outcome?

Align with Your Mission

Some of the best ideas come when you're lounging with friends over break (yes, take your down time, it matters. Need suggestions for how to do that? Check out Find Your Light, free on Kindle Unlimited). Before jumping in, run those ideas through a simple filter:

Does this align with our mission?

Not “Can we do it?” but “Should we?” If it doesn’t fit who you are or what you’re building, jot it down and save it. But if it lights up your mission, buckle up and hit the gas.

Make a Real Plan

Goals are great. But without a plan, they’re just glittery dreams.

Use the SMART model, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. It may feel businessy, but it works. Here’s how it plays out in our world:

  • Monetary goal? Tie it to something tangible. A new light board, upgraded mics, a set designer for your spring musical. People want to know what they’re supporting.

  • Participation goal? Set a number. Double it. Chase it like a kid after a prop cart.

  • Big dream? Break it into smaller wins. Updating your entire sound system might be a stretch, but can you start with one key piece and build from there?

We work in a field where “realistic” is relative. If it feels overwhelming, it’s not a sign to give up. It’s a sign to chunk it out.

Keep It Relevant

Ask: Why this? Why now?

Whether your goal is financial, procedural, or community-focused, connect it to your day-to-day reality. Want to overhaul your rehearsal process? Great! Show how that leads to stronger performances, less burnout, and better student experiences.

Relevance fuels buy in. If it matters to you, it will matter to your students, team, and supporters.

Set the Deadline (and Check In)

Without a timeline, goals drift. Set a real deadline, even if it’s months away.

Then backtrack: What needs to happen this month? This week? Today?

Make check-ins a habit, not an afterthought. You’re the director, build in notes sessions for your goals like you do for your actors.

Enroll Others in Your Vision

You don’t need to pull this wagon alone.

If you’re a one-person department (many of us are), this part is especially vital. Find allies: parents, students, alumni, community members who believe in the mission.

Share the vision. Divide the work. Carry the day.

You’re not just a director, you’re a coach, a cheerleader, a logistics wizard. But you are not every role on the cast list. Don’t try to be. That’s the fast track to burnout.

Tell Everyone

This might be the scariest part: talk about it.

Tell your students. Tell your admin. Tell your community. Shout it from the rooftops.

Sharing creates accountability, and accountability builds momentum. When your plan is mission-aligned and personally meaningful, you won’t get tired of talking about it. Others will catch the spark and help you fan the flame.

Your Year, Your Stage

The new year in the theater isn’t about starting from scratch. It’s about recommitting with clarity, energy, and support.

So:

  • Pick the thing that matters.

  • Make the plan.

  • Find your people.

  • Say it out loud.

And when it gets hard (because it will), remember: You’re not doing this alone.

You’ve got the chops. You’ve got the vision. Let’s make this year count onstage, backstage, and in every moment in between.
