Welcome to the Backstage AIC Blog!
Hello, friends! I’m thrilled to introduce you to the very first article of the Backstage AIC blog! This is a project I’ve been working on for some time, and it’s finally here. If you’re an educator in theater, whether you’re teaching middle or high school, running productions as a volunteer, or working with student theaters in other settings, you’re in the right place. This blog is all about offering you practical tools, advice, and community to make your theater work a little easier and be even more fulfilling.
In this inaugural post, I'm pulling back the curtain to give you an inside look at what Backstage AIC is all about. I’ll also share a bit of the Backstage AIC origin story and talk about the big challenges we’ve all faced as educators in the theater world.
Backstage AIC – a space for educators who wear all the hats.
Why Backstage AIC?
If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing it all on your own—directing, designing, building sets, managing kids—you’re not alone. This blog, and our community, were built to support educators like you who juggle everything behind the scenes. Whether you’re running a one-person operation or leading a small team, you are the Adult In Charge and Backstage AIC is here to help you succeed. This is a space where we share ideas, experiences, and tips that can be immediately useful to you and your students.
At the heart of every great production: a well-prepared crew.
Meet Our Founders
I had the pleasure, good fortune, or maybe dumb luck of finding passion for theater very early. I also married a theater guy and raised my children in the theater. Now productions are a family affair. We felt it was crucial to create this community, specifically for those who work with young people outside the realm of professional or even regional theater for Young People (but they're welcome here too!). Theater education often means being a jack-of-all-trades, and we know firsthand how challenging (and rewarding!) that can be. I fell in love with tech early, and though we've all been on stage, I have a family of writers, directors, and designers. We want to share our experiences, tips, and resources so every student, especially those who live backstage, get the best opportunities. Those opportunities start with the adults leading the way.
